A Bacterial Study of Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis

Abstract
The bacteriological characteristics of chronic maxillary sinusitis has been widely studied with varing results. The reason for this variability has been admitted in different bacteriological sampling with real difference of bacterial flora. Author analysed bacterial organisms in chronic maxillary sinusitis using 102 cases of chronic maxillary sinusitis from March 1978 to July 1979 at Kyung Hee University Hospital. The material for study was obtained by antral puncture with saline irrigation or swabbing secretion by sterile cotton stick and one piece of inflammed mucosa in the sinus during Caldwell Luc¢¥s operation. The results were as follows:
1. Among 141 sinuses, bacteria were isolated in 94 sinuses (66.6%) and others were sterile. Pure culture was found 86 sinuses (6T.0%) and mixed cultures were found in 8 sinuses . (5.6%).
2. Among isolated strains, Streptococcus viridans was the most commonly cultured. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus were-next in order..
3. Staphylococcus aureus seemed to be found. more in specimens obtained by irrigation than during Caldwell-Lot¢¥s operation. However Streptococcus viridans and Staphylococcus epidermidis seemed to be found more in specimens obtained . during - Caldwell-Luc¢¥s operation than by irrigation. -
4. A number of bacterial flora including Staphylococcus aureus and mixed growth were found more in chronic maxillary sinusitis with closed otium than in one with opened ostium.
5. In bilateral cases, the bacteriological charateristics differed. from side to side in more than half number of cases.
6. Any particular relation was not noted between bacterial growth and histopathological type of the sinus rnucosa.
